Functions:
1. Electrical Power Generation: The main function of the stator is to generate electrical power through electromagnetic induction. As the flywheel (with its embedded magnets) rotates around the stator, it induces an AC voltage in the stator windings. |
2. Charging the Battery: The stator's charging coils provide the electrical power needed to charge the battery and maintain proper voltage levels for other electrical systems onboard. |
3. Ignition Support: In some designs, the stator also supplies power to the ignition system, helping create the spark necessary to fire the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chambers. |
4. Regulation of Electrical Systems: The output from the stator is routed through a voltage regulator/rectifier, which converts the AC into usable direct current (DC) and regulates voltage to prevent overcharging. |
Features:
1. Windings: The stator contains several wire coils, often copper, arranged in a circular configuration. These windings generate electricity when subjected to a rotating magnetic field from the flywheel magnets. |
2. Pole Pieces: The stator typically consists of multiple pole pieces, which align with magnets in the flywheel. These pole pieces help convert the rotating mechanical energy into electrical energy. |
3. Mounting Plate: The stator is mounted on a stationary plate, bolted to the engine housing. It remains fixed while the flywheel spins around it. |
4. Charging Coils: These coils generate alternating current (AC) to supply power to the battery charging system. |
5. Ignition Coils: On some stator assemblies, there are additional coils dedicated to supplying power for the ignition system. These coils provide voltage to the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) unit or the ignition system. |
Maintenance Tips:
1. Regular Inspection: Visually inspect the stator assembly for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage to the windings. Look for frayed or burned wires, loose connections, and debris around the stator. |
2. Keep It Dry: Moisture can lead to corrosion or short circuits in the windings. Ensure that the outboard motor's electrical components, including the stator, remain dry by checking seals and ensuring proper drainage. |
3. Check for Overheating: If the stator gets too hot, it can lead to insulation breakdown and failure. Ensure that the cooling systems, such as water intakes and cooling passages, are functioning properly. |
4. Test the Stator: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the stator coils and verify that they are within the manufacturer's specifications. Low or inconsistent resistance readings may indicate a damaged stator. |
5. Replace Damaged Parts: If you notice any damage, replace the stator assembly or associated components immediately. Ignoring problems can lead to more significant failures, such as loss of battery charging or ignition. |
6. Clean Regularly: Ensure that the stator and surrounding components are clean and free from salt deposits, dirt, or debris, as these can degrade performance over time. |
