GASKET,UNDER OIL SEAL HOUSING, Suzuki,
For Outboard: Suzuki DT9.9A, Suzuki DT15A, Suzuki DT15, Suzuki DT9.9
Functions:
1. Preventing Oil Leaks: The primary function of the gasket is to prevent oil leakage from the oil seal housing. Proper sealing is critical for maintaining the gear oil level and ensuring the longevity of the outboard motor's gearcase. |
2. Protecting Internal Components: By sealing the housing, the gasket helps protect internal components like the shaft, bearings, and gears from water ingress, dirt, or contaminants. |
3. Maintaining Lubrication: It ensures the oil within the gearcase remains contained, which is vital for proper lubrication and smooth operation of the motor. |
Maintenance Tips:
1. Regular Inspection: Check the gasket regularly for any signs of wear, cracking, or deformation. It's advisable to inspect it whenever you're servicing the motor, especially after winter storage or heavy use. |
2. Re-grease and Re-seal: Over time, the gasket may lose its elasticity or lubrication, leading to a poor seal. Ensure that the oil seal housing is clean and properly greased before reinstalling or replacing the gasket. |
3.Replacement When Necessary: If the gasket shows any signs of wear, deformation, or damage, replace it promptly. A compromised gasket can lead to oil leaks, which could result in serious mechanical issues and decreased performance. |
4. Avoid Over-Tightening: When installing or reinstalling the gasket, ensure that it's tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. Over-tightening can cause the gasket to warp or break, while under-tightening may result in oil leaks. |
Common Signs of Wear or Failure:
1. Oil Leaks: The most obvious sign of gasket wear is visible oil leakage around the lower unit, especially near the oil seal housing area. |
2. Decreased Gearbox Performance: If the oil level in the lower unit drops due to leakage, the gears may not be properly lubricated, leading to overheating, rough operation, or eventual damage to internal components. |
3. Cracking or Hardening: Gaskets can become brittle or cracked due to age, UV exposure, or constant exposure to heat and pressure. This is often visible during inspection. |
4. Water Contamination: If water is found in the lower unit oil (which should be clear and clean), it may indicate that the gasket is no longer providing an effective seal, allowing water to mix with the oil. |
